De haarcyclus speelt een beslissende rol in de doeltreffendheid van de behandeling. Het is namelijk tijdens de periode waarin het haar groeit dat de laser het meest doeltreffend is, omdat juist op dat moment de haarwortel sterk in melanine geconcentreerd is. Deze melanine is de sleutel voor de werking van de behandeling, omdat het de laser absorbeert die onmiddellijk in warmte verandert en het haar oplost.<\/p>\n

Alle haren hebben dezelfde levenscyclus, maar doorlopen niet tegelijkertijd dezelfde fasen van de cyclus, in tegenstelling tot dieren die welomschreven ruiperiodes hebben. Het is ook belangrijk op te merken dat sommige zones qua duur niet dezelfde levenscyclus hebben: snorhaar heeft namelijk een levensduur van ongeveer 5 maanden, terwijl beenhaar een levensduur heeft van ongeveer 18 tot 24 maanden. Ook de leeftijd en het geslacht van de persoon zijn van invloed op de lengte van de haarcyclus. Het is allemaal een kwestie van hormonen.<\/p>\n

Op 1,5 mm van het huidoppervlak, in de matrix waar de haarwortel wordt gevormd, begint de haarcyclus.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. De anagene fase:<\/strong>
    \nDit is de periode van haargroei waarin de concentratie aan melanine het hoogst is en de ontharing het meest doeltreffend is. Melanine is dan zeer geconcentreerd, omdat in deze periode de pigmentatie van het haar wordt bepaald. Deze fase betreft ongeveer 25% van de haartjes tijdens een ontharingsbehandeling. Dit is eveneens het percentage aan haartjes dat succesvol wordt vernietigd. Deze fase, waarin de corpus papillare (de huidtepeltjes) het haar voeden om deze te laten groeien, duurt 1 tot 3 maanden.<\/li>\n
  2. De catagene fase:<\/strong>
    \nDit is de cellulaire rustperiode van het haar die alle groeiprocessen stopt. Deze vrij korte fase duurt ongeveer 3 weken. Dit is wanneer het haar loskomt van zijn voedende bron om de ontwikkeling te stoppen. De melanine is dus niet erg geconcentreerd in de haarwortel, waardoor de laser bijna geen enkel effect heeft.<\/li>\n
  3. De telogene fase:<\/strong>
    \nDit is het einde van de levensduur van het haar dat plaats maakt voor de groei van nieuw haar. De laser is helemaal niet doeltreffend meer in deze periode, die ongeveer 3 tot 4 maanden duurt, omdat er geen melanine is. Het nieuwe haar in de anagene fase laat het haar geleidelijk groeien in de telogene fase en valt vervolgens uiteindelijk uit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
